英语单词中的形近词就跟现实生活中的双胞胎一样,调皮起来真的是让人又爱又恨。在新SAT的语法考试中这些形近词时常出现,大大干扰了同学们答题的效率与准确率。今天小编就几个语法中的形近词给大家做分析。
1. await VS wait
await vt.
意:If you await someone or something, you wait for them.
例:Very little was said as we awaited the arrival of the chairman.
wait vt./vi
意: You spend some time doing very little, because you cannot act until that
thing happens or that person arrives.
例:I walk to a street corner and wait for the school bus.
2. site VS cite VS sight
site n.
意:a piece of ground that is used for a particular purpose or where a
particular thing happens.
例:I was working as a foreman on a building site.
cite v.
意:you quote it or mention it, especially as an example or proof of what you
are saying.
例:She cites a favorite poem by George Herbert.
sight n.
意:n. ①ability to see; ②something that you see.
例:①My sight is failing, and I can't see to read any more.
②The practice of hanging clothes across the street is a common sight in
many parts of the city.
3. its VS it’s
its pron.
意:“its” is the possessive form of “it”
例:He held the knife by its blade.
it’s abbr.
意:“it’s” means “it is.”
例:It's the best news I've heard in a long time.
4. their VS there VS they’re
their pron.
意:“Their” is the possessive form of “they.”
例:Janis and Kurt have announced their engagement.
there pron.
意:used as the subject of the verb "be" to say that something exists or does
not exist, or to draw attention to it.
例:There are temporary traffic lights now at the school.
they’re abbr.
意:“They’re” means “they are.”
例:People eat when they're depressed.
5. reduction VS reduce VS deduct
reduction n.
意:the act of making something smaller in size or amount, or less in
degree.
例:We found that there’s a trend towards the reduction of exports by
China.
reduce vt./vi.
意:make it smaller in size or amount, or less in degree.
例:It reduces the risks of heart disease.
deduct vt.
意:subtract an amount from the total.
例:The company deducted this payment from his compensation.
6.fair VS fare
fair adj.
意: Something or someone is reasonable, right, and just.
例:I wanted them to get a fair deal.
fare n.
意: the money that you pay for a trip that you make, for example, in a bus,
train, or taxi.
例:He could barely afford the fare.
7. than VS then
than conj.
意:use it after a comparative adjective or adverb in order to link two parts
of a comparison.
例:Children learn faster than adults.
then adv.
意:①one thing happens after another, or is after another on a list;②at a
particular time in the past or in the future.
例 :①Add the oil and then the scallops to the pan.
②He wanted to have a source of income after his retirement; until then, he
wouldn't require additional money.
8. maintain VS sustain
maintain vt.
意:continue to have it, and do not let it stop or grow weaker.
例:After the divorce, their father still maintained close contact with the
boys.
sustain vt.
意:continue it or maintain it for a period of time.
例:He has sustained his fierce social conscience from young adulthood
through old age.
