该词汇在文学类阅读中出现过两次,Cherry印象比较深刻,因为这两篇文学作品中的人物都非常的有趣。一篇来自于OG第三套测试题中的文学类篇章The
Schartz-Metterklume Method. 句子如下:
“How provoking,” said Mrs. Quabarl; “these railway companies are so careless.
However, my maid can lend you things for the night,” and she led the way to her
car.
另外一句来自于可汗中的一篇文学类篇章Jane Austin的NorthAnger Abbey.句子如下:
"No more there are, indeed. How very provoking! But I think we had better sit
still, for one gets so tumbled in such a crowd! How is my head, my dear?
Somebody gave me a push that has hurt it, I am afraid."
在这两处,provoking都是“令人生气的”,“使人恼火的”意思。

provoke作为动词本身就有两个意思:
If you provoke someone, you deliberately annoy them and try to make them
behave aggressively. 挑衅,煽动,激怒,刺激
eg. The lawyer claimed his client was provoked into acts of violence by the
defendant.
词组:provoke sb into sth/doing sth
If something provokes a reaction, it causes it. 激起,引起
eg. The article was intended to provoke discussion.
