I enjoy taking part in voluntary work such as my work experience in Uganda in

August 2014. The visit highlighted the countries many issues such as famine,

poor infrastructure and the vast inequality between developed countries and

developing countries. This led me to read The Bottom Billion by Collier which

enabled me to gain a better understanding of the positions of the countries at

the bottom of the global economic system by explaining the four economic traps.

This suggested that Uganda is a failing economy because it is landlocked by bad

neighbours, as well as recently being stuck in the conflict trap, from which it

has now escaped but is still at high risk of falling back into due to its low

income and slow growth. The Bottom Billion also analyses the effectiveness of

global aid. This had lead me to research about how Britain’s overseas budget is

spent and how the UN aims to deal with global poverty. I found the UN’s 17 new

goals regarding sustainable development and economic policy very ambitious

particularly ending poverty and hunger globally and providing quality education

for all by 2030.

In March 2015 I completed a Future Learn course about how genes influence

cancer development. I found this very beneficial as it built on my knowledge of

genetics and how this has been used to produce technological advances that may

eventually cure cancer. For this reason I am currently doing another online

course about wealth and income inequality with the Open University. As an

academic scholar I thrive on opportunities for independent research and work,

and these courses have allowed me to achieve these aims.

The subjects I have taken through to A Level have taught me valuable skills;

Mathematics has developed my problem solving and data analysis skills and

studying Biology and Chemistry has allowed me to think critically and improve my

investigative skills. I am taking part in the Biology Olympiad competition which

utilises knowledge gained from inside the A level course to answer questions

outside of the course curriculum.

I am applying to study a business degree, specialising in Human resource

Management (HRM) because I have undertaken paid work since my 13th birthday and

have not stopped, having fulfilled a number of roles, in a number of employment

places. The world of business has always intrigued me; being given the

opportunity to study Business Studies at A-level then confirmed my idea of

pursuing a career in business. I am looking forward to learning from a wide

range of modules the breadth of areas associated with running businesses such as

ethics, entrepreneurship and business analysis. I have been interested in

learning about leadership styles on my current Business course, as well as

market segmentations, and finance. I love the way that numeracy, literacy and

ICT skills are utilised in practice-based scenarios and problem-solving in the

study of Business, preparing me for pursuing a successful career. I look forward

to deepening my understanding of budgeting, project management, time-management

and theoretical knowledge of organisations and the behaviour of those who

inhabit them. I am keen to learn more about the legal and economic side of

Business. Being absorbed in this wealth of learning will enable me to create my

own brand in terms of employability, as I realise that businesses occupy

economic, political and social spaces that interact in a complex web

competitively, on the global stage.

My current studies have developed transferable knowledge and skills in

preparation for further education. Sociology has contributed to my knowledge of

issues around equal opportunities e.g. with sexism, racism and ageism in the

workplace. Sociological knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research

methods has provided me with grounding in conducting e.g. training needs

analyses and employee feedback research. I am able to critically analyse

evidence, assess the reliability and validity of data and draw trustworthy

conclusions. English Literature has equipped me with literacy techniques, a high

standard of written English and the ability to critique texts. Business Studies

has given me an insight into the real world of Business by shaping my

understanding of how consumers work, how a business runs and more importantly

how to generate profit. The business world is a rapidly changing global

technological environment that I am fascinated by and I want to enhance my

communication skills and creative solution based thinking. The psychology of

organisations also fascinates me, and is an area I would like to build on.

My employers have found me highly reliable, a hard worker and able to work

with a close team of people. At one company, I was given managerial

responsibilities, supervising a team of five staff in the busy summer months at

a seaside resort. I dealt with customer complaints, reconciled tills, ordered

stock, and made sure the business was working at a high standard. This gave me a

true taste and experience of being in authority. Having worked in a range of

different companies, I have experienced how different organisations operate;

this has given me a varied perspective of approaches in different businesses, in

terms of management styles and differences in company ethos.

I want to study Business because in the future I aim to be an independent

woman, in charge of my own destiny. My keen interest in Business is demonstrated

by my voluntary work helping in Year 10 Business classes at College. The

Business Faculty awarded me as their ‘Student Ambassador’; where I help with

events such as open evenings and mentoring in Business classes. My desire to

learn new things and work out of my comfort zone is illustrated by me currently

working towards a First Aid qualification; testing myself with new experiences

Living in London, which is ranked as the number one city for business,

innovation and culture, exposes me to the world of economics and business on a

daily basis. It was a lecture from the NBCUniversal Vice President of Digital

Marketing, Neil Wirasinha, that first opened my eyes to marketing and its

potential. His lecture described the various marketing techniques used to

promote the film Fast and Furious 7 and I was fascinated to learn about the

interplay between traditional forms of marketing and newer digital marketing

techniques, and how these overarching strands of the global campaign were

realised for individual countries and audiences. I think it would have been

exciting to work on this campaign which aided the film to break several box

office records and go on to take $1.5 billion worldwide. I hope that one day I

will be able to say I worked on such an inspiring campaign and that my marketing

ideas could have the sort of influence and impact that would lead to such

incredible success.

I currently study A-Levels in Media, Film Studies and English Language. I

believe these have taught me many transferable skills as well as providing me

with a strong understanding of marketing principles. In Media Studies, I have

learnt about marketing strategies used by key media industries and have

developed my own marketing campaign to accompany my practical production of a

film trailer/music video. In FIlm Studies I have learnt about a variety of

marketing strategies used in the film industry from utilising digital

technologies for viral campaigns to how marketing can help British film survive

in the shadow of Hollywood to how marketing can be used to help create success

for foreign films. English Language has taught me about the power of words and

has helped hone my ability to use language in a clear and effective manner,

which is useful in order to create successful marketing campaigns that appeal to

the target audience. All three subjects have helped develop my analytical and

critical thinking skills as they allow me to analyse and understand the

construction and influence of a variety of different media products and

texts.

I was very pleased to win a place on my school’s Media Academy programme.

This has benefitted me greatly and led to some fantastic opportunities,

including a six-week paid internship at Global Blue Inc which is a tourism

shopping magazine company. Through this internship I gained knowledge and

experience of the world of work and gained a great insight into marketing and

the importance of brands. During the internship I was tasked with researching

different fashion brands from all over Europe and Asia, making phone calls to

potential clients abroad and setting up schedules for my group. This helped

develop my networking and organisational skills which I feel will be beneficial

at university. I also volunteered at the Hunter Fashion Show during London

Fashion Week which helped polish my leadership and communication skills. As this

was a live event these skills were critical in order to ensure the smooth

running of the event. Fortunately I remained calm under pressure and was

thrilled to be able to contribute to the success of the show.

I am a conscientious, hardworking young person who is reliable and eager to

learn new skills. I enjoy working in a fast paced environment and always bring a

positive energy to the team. I can work well independently or as part of a

larger team. In my spare time I love to play sports and watch films and

documentaries. I have a real interest in marketing, as evidenced by the fact I

have already gained two marketing work placements. I look forward to furthering

my knowledge and passion of marketing by undertaking a degree in the subject. I

am also looking forward to experiencing all the opportunities university life

has to offer. As Cesare Pavese said, “We do not remember days, we remember

moments.” I just hope to have many of these ‘moments’ myself during my time at

university.
