Why does the GMAT exam matter? We kicked off 2014 in with a January Official

GMAT blog post that looked at a recent article in Quartz that suggested that

business schools could be ranked by the average GMAT exam scores of their

students. The piece also referenced a study by the author that found within a

select group of Fortune 500 CEOs, those who attended MBA programs with higher

average GMAT exam scores were significantly more likely to earn more in their

careers.

GMAC research shows — and we’ve been saying for years — that the GMAT exam’s

proven ability to predict success in MBA programs is one of the strongest

arguments for taking the exam and for taking the time needed to prepare to do

your best. The GMAT matters. For test takers, this means taking the time to

prepare to achieve your best score, demonstrate your true capabilities, and

increasing your chances of getting into the school of your choice.

Our 2014 Official GMAT blog year in review provides you with the essential

insights and GMAT test-taking advice to drive your success in the business

school classroom and in your career.

February: Preparation pays off for your best GMAT. As you approach the GMAT

exam, remind yourself that you have what it takes to succeed, but understand

that preparation is critical. In February, we introduced our latest video to

help you get started – from registering on mba.com and understanding the

different sections to mapping out a study plan that works for you. Watch

now.

March: Talk to alumni to gain the most meaningful insight into the business

school experience. In March, we gave you a head start by bringing alumni to you,

nearly 21,000 strong. These MBA and master’s degree alumni come from dozens of

countries worldwide, attended 132 schools, both big and small—and represent

graduating classes across nearly six decades, from 2013 all the way back to

1959. Their perspectives will help support your decision to embark upon a

graduate business education. Learn more.

With the introduction of The Official GMAT Integrated Reasoning Prep Tool in

April, GMAT test takers now have access to a powerful web-based resource to help

them prepare for their best GMAT and showcase the important skills that business

schools and global employers seek today. Learn more.

May: Employer demand for MBAs is high for 2014. In May, we shared data that

showed an upbeat hiring forecast for 2014, propelled by companies with an eye

toward expansion and growth. This means the market for business school talent is

also on the upswing! Get an insider’s look at employer hiring projects and why

companies value business school talent.Learn more.

June: New GMAT score reporting feature gives test takers more control. Under

a new policy designed to improve the testing experience and make the process of

taking the GMAT easier, test takers can now preview their unofficial GMAT scores

before deciding whether to accept or cancel them. In June we offered three

things you should think about and know before you go in to take the GMAT exam,

so that you can take best advantage of the score preview feature and present

yourself in the strongest possible way to schools. Learn more.

July: Build practice sets to master the question formats and pacing of the

exam. Athletes and musicians know it pays to practice, and so do GMAT test

takers. The GMAT is timed and contains question formats specific to the test.

GMAC has long offered practice tests of retired GMAT questions in the free

GMATPrep® software, and recent versions of GMATPrep® have introduced the ability

to build customized question sets to practice. In July, we shared tips on how

you can build and use practice sets to improve your pacing – a key aspect of any

GMAT study plan. Learn more.

August: Soft skills matter for today’s new hires. Successfully pitching a new

product idea to your boss or presenting a financial analysis or strategic plan

to your company’s management team requires a high level of proficiency across a

broad set of communication skills that have never gone out of style—in fact

they’re in high demand. Discover how communication and other “soft skills” will

set you apart from the crowd. Learn more.

September: Plan your financial strategy for business school. Few things in

life have a greater payoff than an investment in education in terms of the

opportunity it provides to acquire skills, build a career, boost income, and

fulfill personal goals. Our new interactive tool, introduced in September, helps

provide some direction as you start to think about ways to pay for school. Learn

more.

October: Internships today lead to job offers tomorrow. When deciding whether

or not to get a graduate business degree, consider the tremendous benefits of

the business school internship. In October, we shared data from recruiters and

business school alumni, who agree that an internship in your industry of choice

is a proven way to acquire real-world experience, on-the-job skills, industry

knowledge, and access to a network of contacts that could lead to a future job.

Learn more.

November: Thinking of launching a business? For entrepreneurs, a business

degree can put you on the fast track to your own business. In November we shared

data from the GMAC Alumni Survey which illustrated that Budding entrepreneurs
