after it had fallen

(C) which have increased 5 percent during the first 3 months of this year

after falling

(D) with a 5 percent increase during the first 3 months of this year after

选项分析：

(A)which increased 5 percent during the first 3 months of this year after it

fell

【错误】

代词指代：GMAT考察的标准书面英语中，代词只能指代句子中出现的，与之数量形式一致的名词性结构，因此单数的“it”无法依照本意指代复数的“profits”。

(B)which had increased 5 percent during the first 3 months of this year after

it had fallen

【错误1】 代词指代：见(A)。

【错误2】 动词时态：过去完成时仅当有必要突出一个动作发生在过去时间或动作之前时才能使用，因此此处“had increased”被误用。

【正确】 “after falling”是定语从句“which have increased 5 percent during the first 3

months of this year”的状语，“falling”与其所在的定语从句的逻辑主语同为“profits”，因此修饰关系明确合理。

【大意】 公司的成本降低措施的结果在其利润上体现明显，继前两年下滑之后，其利润今年的前三个月增长了5%。

(D)with a 5 percent increase during the first 3 months of this year after

【错误】 修饰成分：“with a 5 percent

increase……”属于介词短语结构，介词短语放在主谓结构的结尾且与主谓结构以逗号相隔时，优先作状语。但如果“with a 5 percent

increase……”优先作状语，则无法修饰名词依照本意修饰“profits”

(状语是用来修饰动词的)，因此本选项没能明确建立“profits”和“increase”之间的修饰关系。

(E)with a 5 percent increase during the first 3 months of this year after

having fallen

【错误】 修饰成分：见(D)。

解题思路：

代词“it”无法指代“profits”，立即排除(A)、(B)。

逗号加“with a 5 percent

increase……”放在主谓结构的结尾应优先作状语，因此这一结构无法明确修饰“profits”排除(D)、(E)。
