    4.未知之旅

    ItwasourannualsummervacationandweweredrivingthroughtheSouth

    DakotaBadlandsinourbigfamilyvan.Asan11-year-oldkidfromtheboring

    cornfieldsofmiddleAmerica,Iwasamazedbythesharpbeigeandrust-colored

    mountains,andthewaytheskychangedfrombluetopurpletoadark,angry

    gray.Thentheskyturnedblackandgolfballsoficebeganfallingonus.This

    wasmyfirstexperiencewithhail,andasIwatchedtheheavensraindownlarger

    andlargerlumpsofice,Iformedtheopinionthatitmightactuallybe

    dangerous.Itsoundedlikebigmonsterswerepunchingintheroofofourvan.A

    secondlater,thewindshieldshatteredintothousandsofwhiteshardsandI

    thoughtitwastheendoftheworld.

    Whenthestormpassed,wedrovecarefullytoourhotel,wherewediscovered

    thatourreservationhadbeengivenawaytosomeoneelse,andthat,duetothe

    annualHarleyDavidsonconvention,everyhotelroomina100-mileradiuswas

    bookedfortheweek.Withhungry,scaredkidswaitingoutinthedamagedcar,my

    parentshadnochoicebuttotaketheconcierge’sadviceandseekshelterata

    localCatholicschool.Iremembermydadtuckingmeintobedandthenuns

    turningoutthelights.

    Inthedarkness,Ireflectedontheday’sadventure:Iwasonly11,butIhad

    survivedarealhailstorm,experiencedthetruemeaningof“badlands,”passeda

    dozenleather-cladbikergangs,andwasnowsleepinginagirl’sdormitoryata

    Catholicschool.ThatwasthemomentIbegantorealizethatunplannedtravel

    wasthebestkindoftravel—thatthemomentswheneverythinggoeswrongcanbe

    themostmemorablemomentsofall.

    5.单车与探险之旅

    Iwas8yearsoldonaGiantbike,pedalingonanarrowtrailthroughthe

    farmlandalongtheLoireRiverinFrance–alone.Ofcoursemineandtenother

    familieswerenotfarbehindme,floatingalongintwohouseboats,butI

    couldn’tseethem.Iimaginedmyselfanintrepidexplorer,discoveringasecret

    worldonmytwo-wheeledsteed.Thelittlerocksandrootscrossingmypath

    becamemountainsandevilsnakesthatIbravelychargedover.Idetouredfrom

    thepathtohelpafarmeruntanglethelegsofanewborncalf,stillcaught

    insidehismother,andIsuddenlytransformedintoacomicbookhero–part

    cowgirl,partmidwife.Evenwhenpedalingwiththegroupthroughvillagesonour

    searchforthebestcrepesinFrance,Istillhadthepowertomoveatmyown

    pace,takedetoursandinvestigatecuriositiesalongtheway.Thecombinationof

    anewplaceandabicycle,mysteryandfreedom,resultedinsuchathrillthatI

    havebeenaddictedeversince,exploringdozensofdeveloped,aswellastotally

    wild,placesallovertheworld.Andalways,thefirstthingIdowhenIarrive,

    isgetonabike.

    WhenIwasnineyearsold,mymomtookmetoPerutomeetfamilyforthe

    firsttime.Itwasmyfirsttimemeetingthatsideofthefamily,myfirsttime

    everyleavingthecountryorbeingonaplane,andmyfirsttimeseeingreal

    poverty.ThattripstuckwithmeandisthereasonIstudiedInternational

    DevelopmentinschoolandhopetoreturntoSouthAmericaoneday.

    6.非洲小女孩的美国纽约行

    Somethingmagichappenedwhenalittleeightyearoldgirlgazedwide-eyed

    fromaManhattanhotelwindow.Agruellingthirtyhourjourney,jetlagand

    airsicknessweresuddenlyforgotten.Thiswasit!Shewasin“America”!

    Goosebumpsroseonherarmsasshetookinthecacophonous,jam-packedstreet

    below.

    Downonthestreet,thenoisewasevenlouderandeverythingwasthrillingly

    unfamiliar.Pavementswerenolongercalled‘pavements’–heretheywere

    sidewalks.Zebracrossingshadbecomecrosswalks,andhelpfulneonsignstold

    everyonetoWALKorDON’TWALK.

    FirsttripoutofSingaporewasbyanovernighttraintoButterworth,

    ProvinceWelleslyinthenorthoftheMalayanPeninsula.Iwas14yearsold.The

    trainpulledoutofTanjongPagarstationinSingaporeatabout8a.m.Iwas

    travelingwithmyfather,brotherandtwosisters.Wealltravelledthirdclass.

    Thecarriageonlyhaswoodenchairsandhugewindowsforventilation.Our

    luggagewerestuffedaboveourseats.Webroughtalongsomebreadbutitwas

    finishedevenbeforethetraincrosedthecausewayintoJohor.MysiblingsandI

    wereallsoexcitedasthiswasthefirstholidaytripweeverhadoutof

    Singapore.Irememberlunchwereboughtfromhawkersrunningafterthetrainat

    someoftheintermediatestations.Asthedayswearon,theheatandhumidityin

    thetrainbegantoaffectusallandweweredozingoffinasittingposition.

    Veryuncomfortable.Whennightfell,thetemperatureinthetrainbegantodrop

    graduallytothepointofbeingunbearablycold.Wehadnosweaterwithus.Then

    atmidnight,thetrainstoppedatastation,itwasonlythenthatwehad

    somethingtoeatanddrink.Thejourneywasreallyrough.Itwasnotuntil6

    a.m.thatthetrainfinallyreachedourdestination.Thismustbethemost

    unforgettablejourneyallthechildrenhad.Firsttimeisawendlessrubber

    plantationsontheway.SincethenIhadnottakenthesametrainrideagain.

    Almost39yearsagotodate.Ofcoursethisfirstjourneychangedmyperception

    ThefirsttimeIknewIhadtoseemoreoftheworldwasthefirsttimeIvisitedmyfamilyinBangor,Wales(UK).Itwould’vebeenmidafternoonwhenmyGrandfathertookmeandmybrotherandsistertowalkthedogs.ComingfromManchesterthere’slittlecountryside,thecontrastofgoingfromagreyovercastwithtoweringnewarchitecturetowalkingdownadirttrackwithshadesofgreenbranchingoveryouandstretchingallaroundyouwasphenomenal.

    Irememberholdingtheleadtooneofthedogsasitpulledmealong.BynowthedirttrackwasbrokentarmacbutIstillcouldn’tseetheendofit,thetreesthatwereoriginallyoneithersidewerenow,ontheleft,replacedbyastonewall,coatedinamixtureofmossandmud.Asan8yearoldIcouldn’tseeover,insteadIwaitedforcracksandgatesthatIcouldpeerintothefieldthrough,thereIcouldseeahandfulofsheepscattered,eatingonthegrasssocarefree.

    Theweatherwasfresh,andcrisp,thewindsentasmellsofresh,itseemedtoseparateandreviveyoursenses.Theskywasn’tatallhidden,bynowwewerewalkinginbetweentwostretchesoffields,andtheskysoaredhighabove,bluesandpurples,withcloudstricklingbetweenshadesofcolours.

    Wereachedtheendoftheroad,facingalargegatemyGrandfathertooktheleadoffmebeforeliftingmeuptothesecondbaronthecoldmetalgate,thereIclimbedoverandjumpedoffasdidmybrotherandsister.

    Herewesnappedtwigsandsquelchedinpuddlesofmudasweweresoonsurroundedbytrees,everywherewelookedtheshadesofbrownfromthetreesandthemudstoodoutmorethanthegreens.

    Thesoundsofbreakingtwigsandstickscomposedwithbirdschirpingandflying,wings,bothupanddownstrokes,theoddrustlefromleavesafewfeetawayandthesoundofmovingwaterfromthestreamapproaching.

    Bynowtheskyhadgottendarkerwithpurplesandacharcoalsmudgeoverhead,thegreenhadovercomethebrowninthewoodland,wrappingitselfaroundthetreesandbreakingthroughthemud.

    WewereatthebackofmyGrandparentshousenowwherethesmellofmyGrandmotherscookingandthesoundofclankingcutlerypouredoutofthebackdoor.

    Ididn’twanttotakemywelliesoffasIknewit’dbealongtimebeforeIgottoputthemonagain,Ididn’twanttowaitthatlong.
