Many believe that the Dragon Boat Festival(端午节) originated in ancient China

based on the suicide(自杀) of the poet and statesman of the Chu kingdom, Qu Yuan

in 278 BCE.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a celebration where many eat rice dumplings (粽子),

drink realgar wine (雄黄酒), and race dragon boats. Other activities include

hanging icons of Zhong Kui (a mythic guardian figure), hanging mugwort (艾蒿)and

calamus(菖蒲), taking long walks, writing spells and wearing perfumed medicine

bags(香囊).

All of these activities and games such as making an egg stand at noon were

regarded by the ancients as an effective way of preventing(防止) disease, evil,

while promoting good health and well-being. People sometimes wear talismans to

fend off(抵御) evil spirits or they may hang the picture of Zhong Kui, a guardian

against evil spirits, on the door of their homes.

In the Republic of China, the festival was also celebrated as "Poets' Day" in

honor of Qu Yuan, who is known as China's first poet. Chinese citizens

traditionally throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water and it

is also customary to eat tzungtzu and rice dumplings.

描述有趣的传统,大家可以从传统节日入手,端午节吃粽子赛龙舟,春节吃团圆饭,也可以说一些地方特色的传统,比如西南地区的泼水节之类的。

话题语料库:

1.March 3 Festival is also called Shangsi Festival. Shangsi is the first siri

of March in the lunar calendar(农历). It was a festival to ward off(避免)

misfortunes and pray for blessings(保佑) in ancient China. On that day, the

ancients would go to the waterside to play games, take a bath, or pick orchid

flowers(兰花) in the hope of driving away misfortunes and praying for blessings.

Called xiuxi, or chunxi, the activity was held early in the Zhou Dynasty. In the

Han Dynasty, it was officially prescribed as a festival celebrated on Shangsi of

March. At the Three Kingdoms Period, the festival was stipulated(规定) to be held

on March 3 of the lunar calendar. Later, the festival was continuously evolved,

and the custom of feasting guests on the waterside was formed.

2.The ceremony for men was called the capping ceremony(冠礼), which means doing

hair in a bun or coil and wearing a cap. In ancient times, the capping ceremony

was held in February in an ancestral temple and the date was chosen by the

person to be capped by divination. Three days before the ceremony, he would

select an honored guest to perform the rite as well as a capping assistant to

help out. During the ceremony, the host (in most cases, the father of the person

to be capped), honored guest and the person to be capped were supposed to wear

ceremonial attires. The man was first capped with an inner cap, followed by a

cap and a scarf. After the three steps, the mans hair was combed into a bun,

which suggested the beginning of adulthood.

3.Dragon culture exists in both the Eastern world and the Western world.

However, dragons have different reputation in western culture and in Chinese

culture. The Wes tern dragons are evil animals from hell. They usually have

wings and can send out fire from their mouths.

Dragons are deeply rooted in Chinese culture, so the Chinese often consider

themselves as "the descendants of the dragon". In Chinese culture, dragons are

generous and wise. They are closely connected with the ancient royal family.

According to the popular belief, if you are born in the year of dragon, you will

be an intelligent and brave leader.
