习语(Idiom)是什么?

Idioms are expressions which have a meaning that is not obvious from individual words.

习惯用语(idioms)，简称习语，惯用语，是种固定的表达法，所以又叫做set phrases, 其真正意思往往不同于其组成部分的每个单词。

举个栗子，有这么一个习语drive somebody round the bend 表达的意思是让某人生气或者沮丧，但是我们可能无法从字面意思上去get到这个习语的意思。

下面所有的习语都可以用于雅思口语中，但在雅思写作中，建议大家重点看前面标注【formal】的那部分习语。

on the dot 准时

formal

释义：exactly at the stated or expected time

例句：The plane landed at two o'clock on the dot.飞机两点钟准时降落。

and then some 甚至

释义：and even more

例句：There were 20,000 people and then some at the demonstration.参加示威游行的人看起来有两万人，甚至。

find my feet 习惯于新环境：立足，站稳脚跟

释义：to become familiar with and confident in a new situation

例句：Moving to a new city was difficult as first, but I soon found my feet.搬到一个新城市一开始会觉得有点困难，但是我很快就适应了。

read sb's mind 看出某人的心思

释义：to know what someone is thinking without them telling you

例句："How about a drink, then?" "Ah, you read my mind!"" 那么，喝一杯怎么样?" "哟，你想到我心里去了!"

before long 很快，不久

释义：to be extremely expensive

释义：to do the same things every day and to not want to change those habits

例句：As people get older, they often become set in their ways.随着年岁渐长，人们行事也往往一成不变起来。

(the)bottom line 底细：最重要的事实

例句：The bottom line is that we need another ten thousand dollars to complete the project.基本问题是我们还需要一万美元来完成这个项目。

burn the midnight oil 工作到深夜：熬夜工作

释义： to work late into the night

例句：We’re gonna have to burn the midnight oil to get this job done by tomorrow.我们要加班熬夜才能在明天之前把这个工作完成。

call it a day 结束工作：收工

释义： to stop the work you are doing

例句：I'm getting a bit tired now - let's call it a day.现在我有些累了咱们收工了好吗?

change one's mind 改变主意：改变决定

be over the moon 高兴，快活

释义：to be very pleased

例句：She was over the moon about/with her new bike.她有了辆新自行车，快乐极了。

off the top of your head 凭既有知识：不假思索地

释义：from the knowledge you have in your memory

例句：I don't know off the top of my head, but I could go and look it up.我不能马上告诉你，但我可以去查一查。

catch sb's eye 引起(某人)的注意

释义：to get someone's attention

例句：That pretty girl really caught my eye.那个漂亮的女孩真的引起了我的注意。

down in the dumps 情绪低落，不高兴

释义：unhappy

例句：She's a bit down in the dumps because she failed one of her exams.因为还得重考，她有点情绪低落。

(on the)cutting edge 发展前沿：领先位置

put all your eggs in one basket 孤注一掷：在一棵树上吊死

释义：to depend for your success on a single person or plan of action

例句：I'm applying for several jobs because I don't really want to put all my eggs in one basket.我申请了好几份工作，因为我可不想在一棵树上吊死。

chill out 彻底放松：冷静、镇静

释义：to relax completely, or not allow things to upset you

例句：I'm just chilling out in front of the TV.我只是看电视放松一下。

miss the boat (因行动慢而)错过机会，错失良机

释义：to lose an opportunity to do something by being slow to act

例句：There were tickets available last week, but he missed the boat by waiting till today to try to buy some.上周还有些票，但他一直等到今天才想去买，错过了机会。

释义：not very often

例句：My sister lives in Alaska, so I only see her once in a blue moon.
