In the past decades, children are required to obey the rules or regulations

set by parents and teachers. Nevertheless, nowadays, more freedom is accessible

to them since some educational experts advocate it is beneficial for children’s

individual development.

Apparently, the free right to choose and decide, as the key element of this

kind of freedom, is indispensable throughout the growth of children. Toddles are

allowed to pick up their favorite toys or shoes; pupils have the right to join

the clubs or extra-curricular activities that interest them most; high school

graduates make the choice to attend university or seek for jobs. There is no

doubt that this practice is conducive to build up children’s awareness of being

accountable for their behaviors and decisions. Furthermore, without interference

from parents or teachers, children have to think deliberately and make full

preparations both mentally and physically for tough situations that may arise

when they determine to follow their heart. Obviously, under such circumstance,

the ability of independence and problem-solving can be strengthened, as well as

their characters can be shaped as remarkable as possible.

It must be clear that the definition of children’s freedom is not to do

everything they want, which is the same case as human being’s right of liberty.

In other words, the degree of freedom should be controlled by their supervisors.

As children are naive and ignorant, it is hard for them to distinguish between

wrongdoings and right habits. If they are permitted to purchase whatever they

like no matter how expensive the products are; to watch cartoons no matter how

long they last, what would happen on them? Undoubtedly, that is not the way to

respect them but to trap them into an awful situation.

In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, children deserve the freedom and it

does play a positive role in helping them become productive and responsible

social members as long as such freedom is restricted to an appropriate and

unacceptable extent.
