Task:
People's shopping habits depend more on the age group they belong to than any
other factor. To what extent you agree or disagree?
和其他任何因素比起来,人们的购物习惯更多的取决于他们所在的年龄层,你在多大程度上同意或不同意?
Sample answer:
When it comes to the issue about what factors could contribute to decision
making of consumers, some people may argue that age could directly manipulate
behavior of consumers, but I cannot agree with this opinion.
Admittedly, the assumption of age’s influence could be reflected through the
attitude to new items to some degree. It is common that youngsters usually have
an open mind towards new technologies and equipment. If there was a new product
released, many young people would be likely to purchase it to enjoy latest
technologies while the elderly would remain cautious about it. It does not mean
that the elderly will not purchase advanced commodities; the elderly just need

to receive feedback from others to make a decision, which could be seen as a
common trait of old people. Nevertheless, it may be ridiculous to neglect other
potential factors.
Initially, wealth may also exert an influence on habits of consumers. When
facing new and advanced merchandise, most people have a desire to take it home
but many of them reject such behavior at the end. Why? It is because they may
not afford a high price of new products. Thus, it is disposable income of
consumers that decides whether people could buy new products without hesitation,
but not age groups.
Furthermore, some habits of consumers may originate from advertising by
merchants. For example, discounting has become a popular means of shopping malls
to promote sales. Most consumers may not refuse to buy some items at super
discount prices, although they may not realize that some products are actually
futile for them. Therefore, consumers’ rationality, as well as consuming
patterns, could be influenced by some behavior from advertisers.
In sum, considering the influence from consumers’ own economic conditions and
promotion tricks by merchants, age is not the only determinant for consumers to
make a choice.
