Task：Does The development of computers ; cellphones to translate language

automatically have more advantages or disadvantages?

There has recently been a notable increase of the number of language pairs

offered for automatic translation on mobile phones and computers. However, it

appears to me that favorable as the instantaneous translation may seem, it is

far from desirable.

Machine translation through computers and mobile phones is enormously

convenient. This is especially the case when people travel abroad or pick up a

foreign language. Using real time machine translation tools to translate

wherever and whenever, travelers could make themselves understood or understand

others in a foreign country. Additionally, learning a foreign language can be

far easier and less expensive with this function. A case in point is that a

majority of university students learn a language through mobiles and computers,

both of which make those foreign language learners study flexibly outside the

classroom in any place and in their own time. But unfortunately, this

convenience can hardly be enjoyed under complex and complicated

circumstance.

On the other hand, the linguistic and communicative quality of these

automatic translations can barely be ensured and probably leads to

misunderstanding. It is obvious that computer and mobile phones can only

translate literally and the translation of idioms and slang language will be not

reliable, especially in daily communication, literature and science translation.

Accordingly, the exact meaning of a native speaker could be misunderstood, the

prime of some masterpiece hardly appreciated and some facts easily

distorted.

The lower quality of automatic translation hinders students’ intelligence

development to some extent. A foreign language is more often than not closely

correlated with the unique culture and customs. In attempt to have a better

command of a foreign language and gain a more comprehensive understanding of

indigenous culture, students themselves have to focus on language learning

itself and place emphasis on cultures and customs from which the language

derives. This practice will only be experienced by learners so that when picking

up a foreign language, they can develop their intelligence, stimulate their

imagination and creativity and strengthen their confidence. In this case,

computers and mobiles could help nothing but to make the matter even worse.

To conclude, this powerful function of computers and mobile phones should not

be relied heavily on given the problems it will cause, even though it brings

great convenience.
