Christmas is an annual holiday that, in Christianity, commemorates the birth

of Jesus Christ.

Popular customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of

greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various

decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, nativity scenes, and holly. In

addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in some areas) is a popular

figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for

children.

Over the Christmas period, people decorate their homes and exchange gifts. In

some countries, children perform plays re-telling the events of the Nativity, or

sing carols that reference the event. Christmas, along with Easter, is the

period of highest annual church attendance.

A special Christmas family meal is an important part of the celebration for

many, and what is served varies greatly from country to country. In England and

countries influenced by its traditions, a standard Christmas meal includes

turkey, potatoes, vegetables, sausages and gravy, followed by Christmas pudding,

mince pies and fruit cake.

1. Would you agree that the original significance of festivals is often lost

today?

No, i don't think so . I think the original significance of festivals is to

celebrate our tradition. Every year, hundreds of TV and radio programmes help

the public understand the origins of every traditional festival, and elderly

people in our country like to talk about the origins to their children

continuously. Even though many of the children are not interested in the

festival itself, they love listening to the fairy tales or stories of the

festivals. In this way, i think the original significance of festivals will be

remembered by generations of people.

2. Do you think festivals are important ? Why?

Yeah, there are two reasons for it. On the one hand, they are important to

the country, for it's a time to remember our cultural origin and our historical

past. When a festival comes, the whole country celebrates it . It's very

inspiring and we will be so proud of our cultural and history. On the other

hand, festivals are of great importance to individual since they give us a

chance for relaxation as we often have a few days off. It 's time relaxation,

fun, meeting friends, and entertainment. In other word, festivals help us

balance work and leisure well.

3. How do the media influence festivals?

Media influence festivals in many ways. They can help us create a good

festival atmosphere. For example, in Spring festival, CCTV holds evening

parties, where many celebrities are invited to give performances so that every

year's eve, millions of people stay at home looking forward to the wonderful

programmes with their family members. Some media programmes are also made to

introduce the history of the festivals and current tradition of them.

4. How can the government develop China's tourism?

There are many things government can do. The government should take measures

to develop tertiary industries so that tourists can get the best service. Indeed

the service of the hotels is far from satisfactory. Besides, the government

should lower the tax for tourism.
