Task：

An increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the

natural environment. Why is this case? What can be done to reduce this

problem?

Sample answer：

In the current era, manufacturing consumer goods on a larger scale leads to

the deterioration of the nature to some degree. This essay will examine the

possible reasons and potential solutions for it.

Initially, some toxic elements may be released while not all consumers may

take care of the fact when buying goods. For example, private cars have become a

common necessity for many families currently, but they are not environmentally

friendly. It is because private cars serve fewer passengers than public

transportation does but they still emit much poisonous gases. Thus, when

citizens are eager to buy private cars for their own convenience, the nature

actually suffers from such behavior.

Furthermore, the environmental degradation may arise from excessive

consumption of natural resources. There is an interesting tendency that, in the

past, people might be willing to show off their technological toys to others;

however, currently, they prefer to showing that goods from the nature are more

qualified. With such a tendency, more items made of natural resources began to

gain popularity of the public again, such as purely wooden furniture. Then,

natural resources may face the danger of being exhausted under the demands of

the public.

In order to reverse this tendency, governments should take some initiative to

raise the environmental awareness of the public. Both two facts mentioned above

result from a lack of environmental sense to some extent, and therefore the most

effective approach is to enlighten citizens on this environmental issue. To be

more specific, more noncommercial adverts should be promoted by the authorities

on television during prime time. Also, some policies may be enforced to cut down

the price of public transportation, which may attractive more owners of private

cars. Some more severe laws should be promulgated to punish enterprises which

consume too many natural resources.

In sum, emission of some products and huge exploitation of natural resources

for producing some products may account for why the environment is degraded.

Governments should take the responsibility of educating the public to refuse

items that do harm to the environment.
