There is no doubt that modern technology has caused a variety of

environmental issues, both in cities and towns. Ironically, I feel that

technology can address some of these problems but at the same time, personal

effort is a must.

毫无疑问，现代科技已经在城市和城镇中引发了各种各样的环境问题。具有讽刺意味的是，我觉得技术可以解决其中的一些问题，但同时，个人的努力是必须的。

Theoretically, addressing some environmental issues by adopting simple

lifestyles is sensible. According to the statistics, during the last 100 years,

the earth’s surface temperature has risen dramatically because of human

activities. Therefore, some people feel that the changes in our lifestyles can

reverse this worrying trend. For example, the growing number of vehicles on the

road emits a large quantity of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, which

will worsen the air quality. If residents chose other modes of transport, like

buses or subways, this serious condition would be alleviated to a large extent.

However, in my opinion, this policy would be very unpopular with some people,

especially those living in the suburb, who do need to travel on roads.

从理论上讲，采用简单的生活方式解决一些环境问题是明智的。据统计，在过去的100年中，由于人类活动，地球表面温度急剧上升。因此，一些人认为我们生活方式的改变可以扭转这种令人担忧的趋势。例如，越来越多的机动车排放出大量的温室气体，如二氧化碳，这将使空气质量恶化。如果居民选择其他交通方式，比如公共汽车或地铁，这种严重的情况将会在很大程度上得到缓解。然而，在我看来，这项政策将会非常不受欢迎，尤其是那些住在郊区的人，他们确实需要在公路上旅行。

While it is undeniable that an individual’s behavior has a profound effect on

the environment, other people argue that the improvement in technology can

tackle some problems in turn. For example, the technology today is available to

produce electric cars that would be both quieter and cleaner to use. Persuading

manufacturers and travelers to adopt this new technology would be a more

effective strategy for improving air quality fundamentally.

不可否认的是，个人的行为对环境产生了深远的影响，而其他人则认为技术的进步可以反过来解决一些问题。例如，今天的技术可以生产出更安静、更清洁的电动汽车。说服制造商和旅行者采用这种新技术，将是一种从根本上改善空气质量的更有效的策略。

My own view is that apart from individual effort and environmental friendly

technologies, we need to do more, such as introducing related laws and

regulations. Environmental problems are so complex that each effort should be

combined together to win the battle.

我个人的观点是，除了个人努力和环保技术之外，我们还需要做更多的工作，比如引入相关的法律和法规。环境问题是如此复杂，每一项努力都应该结合在一起才能赢得这场战役。
