The housing shortage in big cities can cause severe social consequences.

Some people think only government action can solve this problem. To what extent

do you agree or disagree?

Introduction

A conundrum besetting the general population is the housing deficit

especially in metropolises. Some people claim that only the authority can

resolve this crisis. Overall, I tend to agree with this view.

Some opposing such a statement may assert that individuals can alleviate

such tension by altering their traditional views or persuading others to migrate

to some developing areas. This is mainly because the sea of people each year

tend to flood into metropolitan areas, as they hold the conventional wisdom that

only when dwelling in large cities can they seek for better job opportunities,

which further incurs the scarcity of housing. Once average people change such a

convention, the number of residents in modern cities will diminish, thus

relieving the crisis. / However, although ordinary people can persuade others

not to crowd into large cities, they are not empowered to force others to do so.

In comparison, the government can issue certain subsidisation policies to make

rural areas more attractive alternatives.

urban planning, with real estatedevelopment included, is a technical and

political process concerned with the use of land, protection, public welfare,

and so forth. Thus, it is not companies but authorities that have not only the

ability to take every factor into consideration but also the power to decide

what kind of housing to be built.
