The graph below shows the amounts of waste produced by three companies over a

period of 15 years.

The line graph compares three companies in terms of their waste output

between the years 2000 and 2015.

首段：Introduction (paraphrase the question)导入转述问题

It is clear that there were significant changes in the amounts of waste

produced by all three companies shown on the graph. While companies A and B saw

waste output fall over the 15-year period, the amount of waste produced by

company C increased considerably.

二段：Overview (two main / general points)概述，讲述2个主要的论点

In 2000, company A produced 12 tonnes of waste, while companies B and C

produced around 8 tonnes and 4 tonnes of waste material respectively. Over the

following 5 years, the waste output of companies B and C rose by around 2

tonnes, but the figure for company A fell by approximately 1 tonne.

From 2005 to 2015, company A cut waste production by roughly 3 tonnes, and

company B reduced its waste by around 7 tonnes. By contrast, company C saw an

increase in waste production of approximately 4 tonnes over the same 10-year

period. By 2015, company C’s waste output had risen to 10 tonnes, while the

respective amounts of waste from companies A and B had dropped to 8 tonnes and

only 3 tonnes. (192 words, band 9)

主体三、四段：elaboration on the points 详述上述论点

这是考官simon最惯常的小作文行文方式：四段式(导入段+概述段+主体2段)，其中概述段起到了一个承上启下的作用，类似于足球里的中场核心的只能，所以，对于如何写好overview

paragraph，simon还是提出了他的几点看法。

1.An overview is simply a summary of the main things you can see.

overview是指简单的概述你在图表看到的主要东西。

2.Because the overview is so important, I recommend putting it at the

beginning of your report, just after the introduction sentence.

因为它在小作文中如此重要，所以推荐放在较为显眼的位置，及紧接在导入段之后写。

3.I write two overview sentences. A one-sentence overview isn't really

enough.

我一般写2句式概述(即2个points)。1句式overview显然不够.

4.Try not to include specific numbers in the overview. Save the specifics for

later paragraphs.

概述中不要使用具体的数据，这些细节应该留到下文中。

5.Look at the 'big picture' e.g. the overall change from the first year to

the last year (if years are shown on the chart), the differences between whole

categories rather than single numbers, or the total number of stages in a

process.

试着从大局入手来写。例如：从第一年到最后一年的总的变化;类别间而不是单独数字间区别;整个过程中的不同的阶段。
