Reality television programs, which feature real people engaged in real
activities rather than professional actors performing scripted scenes, are
increasingly popular.
These shows depict ordinary people competing in everything from singing and
dancing to losing weight, or just living their everyday lives. Most people
believe that the reality these shows portray is authentic, but they are being
misled.
How authentic can these shows be when producers design challenges for the
participants and then editors alter filmed scenes?
Do people benefit from forms of entertainment that show so-called reality, or
are such forms of entertainment harmful?

Little benefit is derived from watching reality T.V. shows. Some people may
consider these shows entertainment but they are actually very harmful to a
person’s physical and mental well-being.
The reality show “The Biggest Loser” presents everyday overweight people
trying to lose weight. People watch the show to be entertained or in most
cases—to learn how to lose weight. However, sitting in front of the T.V. is a
lot different than getting up to exercise like the reality “stars”. Most
Americans sit on their couch eating nachos while watching overweight people
exercise across the screen. The reality show sucks people into a world that does
not exist. It just makes people less of what they want to be—fat and unhealthy.
(comment – this is logically weak here, since watching TV, although taking time,
is part of the informing and learning process. Nothing wrong with taking time to
be informed and learn.)
