Task:Some people think individuals are more and more dependent on each other.

Some people think individuals are more and more independent. Discuss and give

your opinion.

Sample answer:

People hold divergent opinions about whether we rely on others than usual. As

I see it, the pressure of increasing living cost and the development of

specialization make people more dependent on others.

Probably the most obvious reason why people believe we are more independent

is that nowadays many people live by themselves. In the past, extended families

were commonplace while core families are more prevalent in modern life. In this

case, instead of relying on family members, individuals have to handle trivial

chores such as laundry and cooking by themselves. However, dealing with these

trifles is just a small part of daily life. Regarding to significant issues like

buying a house, the living cost is so high that a large number of people,

especially young people have to count on their parents.

When considering this question in a macroscopic manner, we can find more

evidences of an increasingly dependent world. A leading factor driving this

trend is the development of specialization. People in the old time usually do

their job on their own. For example, a carpenter can make a set of furniture

easily without help from others. By contrast, in terms of some situations in

workplace in modern society, people have to collaborate to accomplish a task.

That is to say everybody in a team specializes in their own field and then work

together to achieve a shared goal and it is easy to understand when thinking

about the assembly line.

In conclusion, while there are some situations that people cope with things

on their own, the development of specialization has made teamwork a tendency and

because of this, people will depend on other people at a large extent.
